In order to provide an accurate overview of the condition of Acehnese villages subsequent to the unprecedented destruction inflicted by the tsunami of 26 December 2004, the Kecamatan Development Program (KDP) undertook an assessment of the infrastructure status and social situation of the province.  Drawing on KDP's extensive presence throughout the province, the assessment was carried out in nearly all rural villages in Aceh in August and September 2006.  The infrastructure assessment maps infrastructure and the extent of, and reasons behind, the damage, and provides an estimate of the investment required to replace or repair infrastructure.  The assessment of social conditions examines conflict and tsunami internally displaced persons (IDPs), information needs, social capital and education levels.
