Study Report
The Conflict and Development Program's study reports are grouped by the six strands of the program's research and analytical work. In addition, there is a group for the program's methodological reports.
Conflict Mapping Understanding and responding to conflict requires knowledge of its incidence and impacts. Conflict mapping work includes the development of instruments and methodologies to measure conflict, as well as quantitative analyses of local level conflict.
Conflict Case Studies Case studies of particular incidents of conflict can provide insight into the complex dynamics of larger conflicts. Here, we present ethnographic case studies, collected at the local level, of a diverse range of conflicts including those related to land and natural resources, development resources, domestic violence, vigilantism and broader political conflicts. Regional Case Studies This component presents work on conflict in particular regions (provinces or districts) of Indonesia. Most of the papers combine the use of qualitative community-level fieldwork with analysis of other data sources, in order to paint a picture of conflict in different parts of the country.
Conflict, Governance, and Political Change Conflicts are inexorably caught up in broader dimensions of power, as exercised by the state and other actors. This component will examine a number of issues relating to governance and political change (at the district level and above) including: the role of elites in provoking and preventing violent conflict; elections and conflict; community policing in conflict areas; and youth and reconciliation in post-conflict areas.
Program Evaluation Understanding how different development projects interact with conflict (positively or negatively) is vital for both development and conflict resolution practitioners. So far, program evaluation works has concerned examining the effects of the Kecamatan Development Program (KDP), the World Bank/Government of Indonesia's primary Community Driven Development (CDD) project.
Theoretical and Conceptual Pappers The research program seeks to understand better the incidence, patterns and dynamics of conflict and conflict resolution. This requires the use of, and can help contribute to, theoretical and conceptual models. The aim of this component is to help in the development of theory that may be useful in understanding and conceptualizing conflicts in Indonesia and beyond.
Methodology Papers The research program has necessitated the development of new and innovative research methodologies. This was particularly necessary for the Program Evaluation component and its use of mixed-methods techniques to assess the impacts of CDD projects on conflict. These methodological reports are relevant to conflict and development research in different country contexts as well as to other qualitative and quantitative research topics.
