Welcome to the Aceh Portal

A peace agreement, commonly known as the Helsinki MoU, was signed by the Government of Indonesia and the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) on August 15th 2005, and opened a new era of opportunities for peaceful development in Aceh.  The security situation has improved dramatically since then and ordinary Acehnese are now safe to restart their lives after thirty years of violence.

Conflict and Development Program Objectives and Components

The World Bank's Conflict and Development team has been works in close collaboration with the Aceh Reintegration Agency (BRA) and other national and international stakeholders to support sustainable peace and development in Aceh. The Conflict and Development Aceh program began in early 2005 with an assessment of options for supporting the peace process, and has since grown into a large, multi-faceted intervention that combines research and analysis with targeted technical assistance and operational work. The current program has four primary objectives:

  • To enhance the quality of post-conflict development in Aceh by ensuring assistance reaches vulnerable groups.
  • To provide support to the transition from war to peace, and from externally-driven to Government-led development.
  • To use analytical tools to monitor trends, identify opportunities for intervention, and provide real-time information for policy makers.
  • To enhance the quality of Bank post-conflict responses in Aceh and other contexts by evaluating interventions.

To achieve these objectives, the Conflict and Development team has designed an analytical and operational program centered on four components:

Follow the link above for more details on the operational programs that constitute each component.

The Conflict and Development Aceh program draws on the generous funding and support from the Department of International Development (DFID), the Embassy of the Netherlands through the Aceh Response Facility, and the Post-Conflict Fund.
