Socialization and Media

Ensuring that accurate and timely information flows to constituencies throughout the province is important to managing expectations of those that are impacted by the peace process in Aceh. At the same time, mechanisms that allow these constituencies to discuss issues are needed to strengthen participation in processes of post-conflict development in Aceh. Media, whether it be print, radio, or television, can play both a positive or negative role in disseminating information and promoting dialogue around important issues.

The Conflict and Development team supports a series of small-scale activities that aim to: (a) disseminate information and promote dialogue around peace-building issues, and (b) understand the ways in which mass media shape public opinion around issues related to peace and development. Activities include the following:

Peace comedy film

  Project budget: IDR 475,886,000

Implementing agency: Forum LSM Aceh

The World Bank Conflict and Development Program, with funding from the Royal Embassy of the Netherlands in Jakarta, is supporting a media campaign to disseminate messages of peace to communities and policy makers throughout Aceh. The latest product of the campaign is "Rum'eh" (Smile of Peace), a comedy film starring the popular local comedy troupe Eumpang Breuh (EB). The script development, film production, and coordination with Program's Advisory Committee which involved Dinas Perhubungan Komunikasi Informasi dan Telematika (Dishubkomintel), Komite Peralihan Aceh (KPA), and Badan Reintegrasi-Damai Aceh (BRA), are managed solely by Forum LSM Aceh, a local non-government organization active in community advocacy.

The launch of Rum'eh film on 19 August 2009 was attended by 1,500 - 2,000 viewers and covered by several print and online media. The event was also used to measure the impact of this film. This film receives fairly positive responses from the communities. This is shown by the demands of Rum'eh film viewing from several locations, such as from Sekolah Sukma in Pidie and Bireuen, and discussing it with several artists and cultural observers in Lhokseumawe. Other public enthusiasm indicator is the selling of 10,000 VCD in the market. To supply the public's demand, it is planned to produce 5,000 VCDs, as well as 1,500 VCDs for free distribution to several strategic locations through organization members of Forum LSM Aceh throughout Aceh.
